PCI-e preventing boot?

I'm building a system for a friend and I'm having real trouble booting with a GPU installed.

I can boot without a GPU and the card I'm using works (tested in my system).

Could the board be faulty?

Mobo is a MSI B85I and the card is R9 270X

I've also tried booting with my GTX 570. No joy.

As far as I can tell, all individual parts are working, but not together. Could this be something to do with MSI? The 270X didn't work in my other MSI board, but does work in my Gigabyte board.

I'm stumped!
