Hey guys

I am planning on building a gaming PC in November (I am planning on saving a few bucks on Black Friday/Cyber Monday) and I need some help with my build. My budget is $1000 before savings and the only requirements I have is that I would like to go with a GTX 970 (or 980 if possible although I highly doubt that I can fit that into my budget), I would like my Mobo and CPU to have overclocking capabilities although this is not necessary, I would like a SSD that can at least hold my OS and a game or two that takes longer to load (BF4 for example) and a simple good looking case (I chose corsair because I really like their design even though they're a bit pricey). I already made builds with the help of my friends but I would like to have more people take a look at them and give me more suggestions.

Now that that's out of the way here's a little catch. My friend said he would give me his MSI Z87-G45 and 8GB of RAM for cheap or even free but I am not sure if he actually will give me those parts or not. That's why I have two builds, one for in case he gives me the parts and the other in case he doesn't.

Let's get to it then shall we.

(The 970 is currently out of stock so the price is not displayed but let's assume it costs $350)

Slightly over budget, but a much better build.  This is assuming your friend is not giving you anything.

If your friend does give you or sells you his Z87 motherboard, make damn sure that he has it updated to the most recent BIOS so that devil's canyon will be compatible.

Check out the Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case:

Don't worry about case fans until after you have your core components. Get the most performance out of your money now.  Case fans can easily and always be added and interchanged easily throughout the life of your computer.  Core components are much more expensive and harder to change in and out than case fans.

You can get a lesser wattage PSU. Other than that it looks solid. And I just usually go for a really cheap case in around 1000$ builds just to be able to focus on the internals the most.

No reason not to get a slightly overwattage PSU if it's a decently priced, good quality PSU.

Looks like a good build.

If you aren't getting an overclockable CPU (like your second build) don't bother with the liquid cooler.

Otherwise I agree with Faceman's build.

You can use your friends mobo but he needs to update it to the newest bios version before removing his CPU otherwise it wont work with the CPU you choose..

I would not call a 750W unit in a probably 300W draw build slightly overkill. If OP has not intention to go SLI in the near future there is no point.

Thanks for all the really fast advice guys.

I have just joined this community recently (as you can see by my number of posts) and it has already blown me out of my socks.

I will take all your advice into account when I chose the parts for my final build. I will keep you posted and I'll let you know when I have more questions.

This entire experience of picking out my parts has been very fun and I can't wait to take my gaming experience to the next level (I currently game on a Lenovo Y500). Luckily I still have about a month to decide on my final build and I hope you guys can help me get the most bang out of my buck.

My build: CPU:  i5-4670K Mobo: ASRock Z87 Extreme4 RAM: Kingston Fury Red Series 16GB GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 970 STRIX Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D

Hey guys

The ASRock Z87 Extreme4 is currently on sale on Newegg and about $70 off (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157488&cm_re=Z87_Extreme_4-_-13-157-488-_-Product)

I am really tempted to buy this mobo while it's on sale. Opinions?
