My Gigabyte 970 G1 should be here tomorrow.

 

My exact plan is to first install the drivers, run the Unigine Heaven Benchmark and see if things are stable.


I will instantly set my settings to 50% of the increases they made over the default settings, they increased their core clock by 150mhz, so I will start with an increase of 75mhz.

I'll continue slowly increasing all the settings they've increased with MSI Afterburner, attempting to match their overclock, running the Unigine Heaven benchmark after every change.

That's about it, does that all seem correct?

Honestly, gpu overclocking is so simple. No plan needed. Use the sliders. Set it to 1400mhz then just bump it by about 25mhz until it crashes or starts artifacting. Then just scale back a bit. However I think that the most brutal benchmark at least on my 780ti was metro last light benchmark. If it past that 3 times, it was good to go. Same with my gtx 780.

The process you've explained seems pretty solid to me however always remember that one cards ability to overclock will rarely match the ability of others. On the flip side of that you could end up with a card that will surpass theirs.

I know, if I was expecting it to perfectly match theirs, I wouldn't waste the time of taking precautions to ease up to it, I would just copy/paste their settings. Good to know what I'm doing looks solid.

Yeah you could always do that. But I myself wouldn't do that unless I was watercooling just because the gains you get from overvolting on air just don't seem justifiable to me. You also void warranties by doing that. I think most companies don't care if you overclock, as long as you don't overvolt. If im not mistaken.

Well in all reality you could just crank everything up and run it, i find the cards from 600 series and on have been smart enough to protect themselves from damage due to retarded oc's

I've followed a very similar methodology for overclocking my cards since I got my HD 6950. I add a few gaming benchmarks on top of the synthetic ones. I've never fired a card better safe then sorry even if cards have better safety features then they use to.
