Computer shuts down when gaming

Go to solution Solved by PandaMan,

Hmm... sounds a bit more complicated,it could either be the Game itself or the mobo PCIE lanes screwing things up.. i guess you're gonna have to do the following (before any of this uninstall & reinstall the latest drivers & run a good registry cleaning soft)

  • first try swapping the mobo & do the usual stress testing if that fails
  • Try reinstalling the game from a different source into the ssd alone(unplug the other hdd) (if that one fails try installing it on the spinning hdd)

Quote back if anyone of those does the trick we'll continue from over there...

Pretty much figured it out, swapped mobo w/ a friend and it worked so now just waiting on asrock or newegg to send me an rma form

About a month ago i had my computer built and everything seemed to running pretty smoothly. Whenever I would put it under load, (gaming/rendering videos), it would be completely fine. Just a few days ago I installed a Hyper 212 Evo and now whenever my computer is put under load it shuts down within 5-10 min. Nothing is overheating because my CPU temps are about 45c-50c  when gaming and gpu temps are about 65c-70c. I can browse internet just fine and play simple games like Minecraft or Hearthstone, but when I play something that requires my computer to be pushed slightly it will shut down after about 5 min of gameplay. Im not sure whether this is a PSU thing or what, but if anyone has a suggestion on what I could do that would be much appreciated.

SPECS:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3
MB: ASRock H97M PRO4
RAM: 16GB
SSD: A-Data Premier Pro SP600 128GB
HD: Western Digital WD Green 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM
GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 780 3GB DirectCU II
PSU: Rosewill 650W 80+ Bronze Certified

As askmax said, try to reapply thermal paste & make it a snugly fit this time, also check if the mobo is bending because of the weight, it might be an issue if you haven't properly pinned the mobo to the case, also see if the gpu is overheating..

Details separate people.

I have reapplied thermal paste and made sure everything was secure, but I will check to see if the mobo is bending

bending is a light issue, usually i had issues like yours when GPU was overloaded for whatever reasons Power draw, cpu overheating,

check if theres an issue with PSU as well, use a working PSU from one of your friends or relatives to see if the issue is from the powersupply under same conditions.

Sent in the PSU last week and just got the replacement in the mail. Put it in and still having issues.

Hmm.. if it isn't the PSU then? maybe it's the GPU itself, But first try to get the latest updates installed after clean uninstall of current GPU driver(could be faulty driver), quote back if the issue is still there.. otherwise you need to get the GPU rma'd as well..

Its not the gpu because i tried swapping it out with my friend and it works fine when he uses mine, but mine still shuts down with a different card inside

Hmm... sounds a bit more complicated,it could either be the Game itself or the mobo PCIE lanes screwing things up.. i guess you're gonna have to do the following (before any of this uninstall & reinstall the latest drivers & run a good registry cleaning soft)

  • first try swapping the mobo & do the usual stress testing if that fails
  • Try reinstalling the game from a different source into the ssd alone(unplug the other hdd) (if that one fails try installing it on the spinning hdd)

I just tested out rendering some videos, because I also do video editing on my pc, and can rule out the games being at fault because it shut down about 2 min into the render. I'll try switching out the mobo sometime this weekend and seeing if that works
