Hello I'm new here and you all seem like a great bunch. I have a question about upgrading my GPU.

With the new GTX 970 and 980 I was thinking about upgrading my GPU to something a bit more powerful because my GTX 760 just doesn't cut it any more since I moved to 3 1080p monitors. I am looking into getting a GTX 980 but I wanted to check with some others about what my best option is to upgrade into for running 5760x1080 gaming. My budget isn't exactly tight but I will have to decide at time of purchase how much I want to spend. I also generally prefer Nvidia cards but I am open to be convinced in to a AMD if there is a good enough benefit to change.

The 970 should do fine, though you would probably want two in sli for the best performance.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

a 290 or 970 will run most games at mostly high settings at smooth framerates.  If you want all ultra then you should get 2 970's or 290's (but probably 2 970's because they will consume so much less power) or maybe a 980.  a 980 won't be as good as 2 970's though.

right now I have one 290, and later on I might add another one if I'm not happy with the performance, but so far it's been good with just one

XEON E3 1231v3 | GA-Z97MX GAMING 5 | XFX R9 290 | 16GB RAM | CRUCIAL MX100 256GB | WD BLUE 1TB | EVGA SUPERNOVA 850W | CORSAIR 350D

Ok so it seems to me that 2 970's seem to be the better option however then I run in a new problem and that is that my motherboard isn't SLI compatible (amature mistake during purchase). Would it still be worth it for me to buy a new motherboard because it seems I am going to need one anyway because Asimrc mentioned that 3 screen practically means 2 card minimum?

the Zotac Amp! Extreme 970 is THE BEST single GPU for triple 1080p with it's capability of 1.5Ghz OC (still cool and stable) and beats out even the 980s.  but is $70 more than cheaper models.  3 Screens Does NOT mean 2 card minimum unless you demand 60 fps in Ultra.  (I can do low settings at 60ish fps with my GTX 660 2GB)

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

I don't really demand ultra but I like my games to at least run on high. I'm thinking I will just get a single GTX 970 for now and a new motherboard because regardless that will be a improvement from what I have now and then buy a second 970 whenever I decide I want an extra boost.
