Quick question about RAM compatability

Go to solution Solved by MourningSouls,

There is compatible, and then there is certified. Compatible would basically be DDR3, non-ECC. Certified just means Asus or whatever other brand has tested it.

Now it's not always a perfect system, some RAM is just finicky, but Kingston is quite good at making sure that their RAM is friendly.

You should be perfectly fine. Well, so long as there aren't any clearance issues with your CPU cooler. It's not very tall stuff, but I had to change my purchase plans to lower profile stuff to use my cooler. Stock cooler will be perfectly fine if that's what you're using.

First time posting here, so I hope I'm posting this in the right place.

To be clear, I'm not asking if 2 sticks of these is better than 1 stick of that.

What I'm asking is the compatibility.

Suppose you have a mobo, an ASUS B85M-G for example. Where exactly am I suppose to look to know what RAM is compatible with that specific mobo?

I know that this ram: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/kingston-memory-khx1600c9d3k416gx[1] is compatible with it, because I cross checked it on the ASUS website.

What if, for example, I wanted one of the newer made RAMs and it isn't covered in the ASUS website, because obviously said RAM was made after that product guide was made.

So where exactly am I suppose to look to check?

Let's say that I wanted to use this ram http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-FURY-1600MHz-DDR3/dp/B00J8E92M6 to upgrade my PC down the line (as an example, mind you). How would I know if that RAM would be even compatible with my mobo?

Noob question. I'm a rookie PC builder. But it's something that always made me wonder. I just want a very simple, concise, clear cut yet DETAILED answer. Thanks in advance!

Ram compatibility is based on the slot (DDR2 / DDR3 / DDR4) If it says DDR3 in the Mobo description any DDR3 ram will work. To answer your Q specifically: yes that ram will work on that mobo.

As long as the memory you are installing is ddr3, non-ECC memory, it will work.

So the new ddr4 sticks are not compatible.

Using two or more sticks from different maufacturers _usually_ works as long as they have the same cl-number and frequency, but I wouldn't try it myself.

Basically, almost any ddr3 is compatible. If it has higher fequency than the board supports, you can always run it slower. That's another thing I don't recommend since slower sticks are generally cheaper.

Hope I answered you question! :)

So quoting the mobo manual:

DDR3

So as long as it is DDR3, it passes this check? Question, DDR3 is different from DDR3 SDRAM, right?

1600/1333/1066 mhz

So these are the only speeds my mobo can handle then?

Say I wanted to use this RAM:

http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-Motherboard-KHX18C9T2K2-8X/dp/B008YAI7E4/ref=psdc8_t2_B00A77202C_B008YAI7E4

Which has 1866mhz. Does that mean it'll be automatically clocked down by the mobo to 1600 mhz for it to become compatible?

non-ECC, unbuffered memory

Uh...are majority of RAMs nowadays like this?
