When you say private secure cloud do you mean you want the files to be encrypted on the server or you want to access it securely?

 

The first one if more difficult to setup, and probably wouldn't be worth the effort. The latter is easy, install something like debian on the server and then install OwnCloud.

SFTP is wonderful and requires very little effort to setup if you'll be running a linux distro...
