ATM I am thinking of building a gaming pc and a 4790k cost $100 more than a 3930k which one should I pick up.

(prices 3930k=$299 4790k=$397)

for gaming, the i7-4790k.

i7-3930k retail isn't $299 (prolly the i7-3820) as the retail of the 3930k is $599

and used is about $425 (just sold one). you may want to verify that price.

At the shop I am buying the CPU from is selling it for $299 it's normally more expensive.

Edit: This is $30 more expensive than an i5 4690k

They're both great cpus. Can't go wrong with either. Get the 3930k because it's cheaper

But it's horrible. Consumes way too much power when overclocked, performs up to 40% worse clock for clock, with AVX2 the 4790K gets close or even passes the 3930K in multithreaded performance. A 4690K is a better buy than a 3930K

Not to forget, 3930k is for 2011 socket (X79, X99), and these boards tend to be more expensive than 1150 sockets (Z87; Z97) so, even with that particular offer on the 3930k, you may end up paying (much) more for the complete package.

well 4-way SLI X79 mobos are dirt cheap in the UK atm  ( as low as £130). its X99 that is expensive, but Z97 is more future-proof ( PCi 3.0, native USB 3, SATA III, M.2, SATA Express, better power-efficiency and more). However, sandy bridge generally overclocks better than haswell and u are getting 50% more CPU (on paper at least) for less
