SSD Raid 0 questions

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

Hey there N00BYSL4Y3R,

SSDs in RAID0 are truly astonishingly fast with great read/write speeds. But for OS booting times, things are different. Due to the RAID controllers and other detection issues, OS boots fast with a single SSD rather than multiple SSDs in RAID0. I've seen people benchmarking this situation and sometimes the RAID0 is slower by up to 10 seconds compared to single SSD boot (we are talking about identical SSDs).

For booting, I would say get a single SSD, but for transfer and work on files, running programs and game load times, SSDs in RAID0 would be the better option. Do have in mind that in RAID0, if one drive fails, you lose all information in the array and getting data off of failed SSD is much harder than from HDD (even for a data recovery company) due to the nature of the storage technology that is used.

Hope this helps,

Captain_WD.

So ive been searching for ssd options for my new build and been wondering if 2 ssd raid 0 can boot window 7 faster than a single one? or maybe I should use the raid 0 just for loading my games and using one for the OS? or raid 0 is not a good thing and should just go with one ssd for OS and another for games?

What option should I go with?

I would go with 1 bigger SSD compared to 2 in raid 0, 2 ssd's will be faster but 1 ssd is already plenty fast, also higher capacity ssd's have more flash chips to write to so usually the higher capacity version of an ssd will already be slightly faster than the smaller one. And the 1 higher capacity ssd will be cheaper ( per gig) compared to 2 of half the capacity ssd's.
