ThrustMaster TFlight HOTAS X is pretty much the only HOTAS you're gonna get under $100.

Any joysticks you'd recommend over it? or those wheel things in planes (forget the name)

Edit: Remembered they are called Yokes

Scratch the budget guys, but a few questions. What setup would be best (HOTAS, Joystick or Yoke), What is the best of its category without being ridiculously expensive (around the level of the Logitech G27, good for its price but not super hardcore)

I would go with either a joystick or  a HOTAS, there seems to be little support for yokes.

This is the only yoke I could find: http://www.pilotmall.com/product/CH-Products-Flight-Sim-Yoke-USB-3-lever/flight-simulation

And for joystick and throttle I would say CH pro throttle and T16000M, they cost about $100.

I could find the joystick but the throttle is nowhere to be seen in AUS, big PC places don't stock it, no 2nd hand ones and i'd rather not pay an arm and a leg for shipping from the US. Is a throttle really necessary or would just the joystick suffice? And as a note about joysticks, i've heard the Logitech extreme 3d pro is the best one for cheap, is that true? or is the thrustmaster better.

The Logitech extreme 3d pro is one of the best joysticks in that price range, it's just a bit less precise and more budget oriented than the thrustmaster.

The throttle isn't necessary you just get a more emerged experience with it.

Do not go with a yoke, the travel distance on a yoke from extreme right roll to extreme left roll is a far longer turn than a joystick, a joystick gives you more controlls at your fingertips.

There isn't too much under $100 but this one is $65 + shipping, and has dual independent engine control (ie the left engines can be set to different levels than the right ones)

If you want to splash the dough for something really good, try this, but it is $250ish (but I highly recommend it for flight sims)

Aaah,  so it's still good, but price/performance good. And i think i could live without a throttle if that's really all the difference. Not sure if i'd want to go cheap anymore, i think i'd regret spending money that i could have put towards more expensive but better setups. Seems its only $30  id probs pick it up and use it 'till i can find a well priced X-55 Rhino or similar

Avoid Yokes: Got it

But that FLY 5 looks uncomfortable though lol

But that x-55 looks so good. Might do some gumtree stalking and snatch one up for cheap like i did with my g25 lol, or just get it for Christmas lol.

You know, it's a better idea to get Thrustmaster Warthog, instead of x55.

They have better electronics (Hall sensors, that is) and build quality is much sturdier.

And that fly 5 is just a cheap crap :/

Got the x55 for star citizen and I must say, its pretty good. The Warthog will always have better build quality but just has less features. paid 200 euro's for it.

Now all we have to do is wait until they implement in game key remapping :)

is it MUCH better than KB+M?

I would say that at t his moment in time the KB+M combo makes a bit more sense as flying  with a HOTAS in SC takes some getting used to.

Especially now when they're constantly making changes to the flight model. The workaround to map all the keys to a HOTAS takes some work but there are a lot of great x55 profiles out there like this one.

I find the learning curve to be worth it, as using a HOTAS alongside voice attack to be more immersive.

When the game goes gold, there shouldn't be any real (dis)advantages to any method of control. (apart from the gamepads with the limited amounts of keys)

Welp

Is the Thrustmaster Cougar any good? I can get one 2nd hand for pretty cheap.

I'd rather have that large learning curve and all the problems that arise from using the HOTAS than have it be less fun and unrealistic (I'm already working on a frame for my G25 to make it as realistic as possible, why not the HOTAS aswell)

Cougar is good, but you should check the potentiometers. Cougar had problem with them. The BIG one. Some of them died really quick, some had blind spots... etc.

So, before buying - check the apparatus thoroughly(!!!). Windows calibration software should be sufficient for that. Check all of axis and search for those nasty spikes and dead spots. If any - not worth it.

If it's too risky i won't worry about it, and then if they break easy i'd have no warranty

Correct.

Also, remember what Henry Ford ones said - "The best car is the new one" :)

Well, i did get this PC for 2nd hand and it's been running with no kinks whatsoever for almost a year now. As well as my Logitech G25

I have personal concern about 2nd hand goods - don't know how it was handled by previous owner. So...

But it's just me*
