If you like cranking things up, get 980. It is a matter of personal preference. Both do 1080p well. 980 with more eye-candy.

980 would just be complete overkill for 1080p ... just go with 970. They oc to the stock performance of a 980 if you really need it ...

I hate it when people give misleading information like this. I have a 780ti Classified, and I have still had plenty of instances where I can't maintain 60fps at 1080p. And I think it's pretty safe to assume that we, as PC gamers, clearly want at least 60. Any type of Physx, or especially Tressfx, can and will bring your frames right on down from 60. You are also limited in how much AA you can use (I mean certain games will dip below 60 a little bit with even 4x MSAA). There are extremely demanding games already out (Metro and Crysis 3 being the big ones) that a 980 or 780ti will still not be able to fully keep up with and max out--and I don't mean full AA. Then there are poor ports that don't run as well as they should, the ability to downsample if you have extra wiggle room, newer games obviously continuing to get even more demanding, etc.

If you want to comfortably game at 1080 without making sacrifices, then you should get a 980.

Would you be able to cite a game that drops your fps under 60 at 1080p? I would love to try it myself on my 970.

Metro Last Light (SSAA), Metro 2033, Crysis 3 (~8x MSAA, maybe less), Tomb Raider with Tress FX in two areas, Tomb Raider with SSAA in most areas, Dark Souls 1 with the HD Texture Packs (Yes, it's a mod, but the game is far from advanced, and it's the way it should be played), Some very sparse drops here and there in Thief, Assassin's Creed IV with physx past low or with AA up to 4x MSAA (slight drops) and more drops at anything past that are a few off the top of my head. The 970 isn't as powerful as the 780ti, so it's not even really a question.

i would like to point out i didn't specify a FPS, i said it run everything and from what i can tell there isn't an issue im not dropping below 30fps where it becomes a much more noticeable problem and i normally stay above 55 obviously demanding games will be a problem but even for the 980 it will be a problem

980 @ 1080p having problems staying above 60fps? You are the first to report this.

You can't be serious.  Hyperthreading is a market joke?

80 is an average for metro from anandtech, 73 for crysis with everything on max.

All the benchmarks I've ever seen for those games maxed at 1080p with at least some AA (and with Metro using using Physx) do not maintain 60. I've played them myself, too. Please do think whatever you will, though. It just irritates me a wee bit because misinformation like this gets people that are just now getting these big, fancy GPUs to think they will eat anything for breakfast at 1080p with any settings under the sun(I know I did before I got my 780ti), and it's simply not true. Most things? Sure. But not everything--especially when Physx or a certain degree of AA comes into the equation for more advanced games or for dodgy ports that aren't optimized quite well enough.

on specific games that are very very demanding when sitting at ultra with AA on and what not

AA and Physx are usually what ultimately make the difference. If you don't plan on using Physx and don't much care for AA, then I'm sure you'll never have a problem maintaining 60. I just think those caveats thoroughly disagree with the notion of a card being 'overkill' for 1080p.

I obviously havent played all games but my 1590/8000 970 doesnt have any issues staying above 60fps using full AA and physx. Hell, even using DSR at 4K I stay above 60fps in some games.

What games are you specifically talking about? I am genuinely interested and would like to do some more digging.

I gave some examples back on the previous page. Also, keep in mind that I have a 780ti Classified, not a 980. No, there's not a big difference between them, but still. Also keep in mind that I'm talking about drops vs maintaining 60. I don't mean that they'll just be tanking down all the time.

Maybe modded or poorly optimized games(Broken).

Crysis 3 1080p has averages of 45-50fps, on arma 3 about 50-55 and assassins creed black flag only just hit 60 fps :/

OK so maybe overkill isn't quite accurate. It is enough to handle those games according to those benchmarks. But not overkill, the gtx 970 actually doesn't lag Behind the 980 too much at all and was able to keep similar fps throughout the tests at or above 60 on average, just enough to do so. The 980 would be a better performing option if you are able, games are only going to get more demanding after all.
