$2000 gaming/rendering/editing build

Go to solution Solved by EcoBoost,

Something is more important than a computer? What is this. Jk. Good to hear, and good luck in school.

I'll get an SSD for mine and probably a better PSU. When you're a girl a lot of stuff is more important then a computer :P and thanks!

Hey guys, so with the classes that I've been taking in school recently I've been doing more and more rendering and video editing, and I want to get into overclocking, I was thinking of possibly building a new PC to keep up with the demand. My current PC (in profile) is by no means a slouch, so I was wondering if shelling out money for a whole new rig was actually needed or I should wait a while.

If I did build a new PC I'd put my budget at $2000 Canadian for tower and monitor since i'd like to run two. I came up with this, and if you guys could provide me on with some insight on it then that'd be awesome. Thanks!

A single more powerful gpu would be better for video editing. Only one gpu is typically used for some gpu accelerated functions - depends on software, (e.g. Premier Pro CC only uses one gpu for real-time playback).

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

running dual 970 and only a 1080p monitor is a waste.

i suggest a 1440p monitor and a 980 cause it will cost less

also switch your hdd to something more reliable

The PC will also be used for gaming so compared to a single 980 I can live with the slight decrease in video editing performance in trade for more gaming FPS

I'll eventually be upgrading to 4K when the panels get better. I'll be running two 1080p in the meantime (only using one for gaming, but both for editing and rendering)

If so everything seem fine for me. For 4k you might need another GTX 970 though, so becareful about the mobo choice. also if you are using 2 1080p monitor now and want a 4k monitor later on, try to make sure that the screen size (24" or so) of those 3 will be equal, or at least the 2 1080p is equal, just so it look better sitting next to each other :P

Well since I'll only be using two screens for productivity and doing two different things on each screen I might just run my current Apple Cinema Display (20" 1680x1050) and a new 1080p monitor until I get a 4K. I don't mind screen size difference or resolution difference when doing multi monitor, since I'm not spanning one program across both screens.

Ok, Get yourself a Xeon, They do really well when it comes to rendering.

I've owned locked CPU's all my life and I'd like to get into doing some overclocking.

Hey, only thing I'd change here is storage : I'd go with Western Digital Black if you do some video editing and need fast storage and don't mind the noise, or a Red for reliable storage and extremely quiet operation (like reallyyyy quiet if you're also a silent freak!)

I changed the build to a full ATX system because I cannot bear the thought of 2 GPU's sandwiched together. But it's still easy to move around. Changed the CPU cooler to something a bit better, for only $10 more. Anyway to the plan; get that, or indeed any dual fan GTX 970, and then a blower cooler below it. Having two open air coolers in one case just dumps all the hot air in your case. Makes the case fans work harder. And having two blower coolers have the opposite effect. Case thermals are fine, but they're gonna be louder. This third way just seems more sensible.

Also changed your monitor to an IPS panel, and a more economical PSU. The monitor is quite a bit more expensive, but that's up to you. Et voila!

That monitor's got to go, look at the price!

Bear in mind she wants to SLI and also edit stuff. You haven't really left that option with the price of your spec.

One 970 will do great. She can always upgrade later. I just went with a good mixture of CPU performance, and graphic performance. As for the monitor, I went with an IPS monitor that had good reviews. Also I'm pretty sure the PC had already been bought, because this thread was made almost 3 weeks ago.
