So my friend recently purchased a new laptop.

And it is really nice and works well. I'm looking to build my own desktop and these are the parts i have chosen.

Will performance be similar in gaming on the 2 or will one be better than the other?

I'd say you would see similar performance between the two. But having a desktop will be better for gaming, since it won't run as hot or loud

i would say if you go under a intel i5 get a AMD FX instead

Yeah, I would get the FX-6300. It's $99 right now and it pairs well with the R9 270X. It's what I have in my PC right now.
