Help choosing the right hardware

Go to solution Solved by TRINHbot1101001,

Any DDR3 RAM will work for your CPU and Mobo. It's the X99 processors and boards that need DDR4 RAM. And 1600 mHz should be fine, cause there really isn't much of a performance increase if you buy 1866 mHz. Kingston and Corsair are good brands that come to mind.

Hi all,

I'd like help choosing and understanding what the best RAM to get for the new mobo and cpu I'm getting might be. My pc took a serious hit due to a lightning strike about a year ago, and that fragmented the OS on my hardrive to the point at which I had to rely on my computer science major buddy to retreive all of my old files and successfully login to my pc again. (I've replaced the hardrive and os now) Ever since then my pc's performance has dropped significantly and I'm sure the cpu and mobo were somehow damaged from the lightning stirke too.

Anyway I finally have some money to spend on new parts for my pc, and I do a lot of gaming and writing for college asaignments on my pc, so I wanted a great cpu, especially one for very cpu intensive games like Planetside2. I was looking at getting this mobo cpu combo --> http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9193808&csid=_61&rrpl=item_page.content3&rrstr=PopularProductsInCategory&rrindex=2

(an i7 4790k and asus z97 mobo)

With these new parts I don't quite know what speed of DDR3 ram I need to get that is compatible with them. i initially thought that any DDR3 ram works for any DDR3 mobo and cpu, but I've heard that some are made specifically for certain cpu generations, etc.  Are there any really good models that people can reccomend for this mobo/cpu combo?

Also, I have a 500 watt psu, and an msi gtx 660 (planning to get the gtx 980 farther in the future). Will I need to get a larger power supply for the new mobo and cpu?
