If this is just for gaming, then ditching X99 would do you wonders. (I know you want to keep it though)

Why go for X99 when

 

a ) You're not going to get an actual enthusiast CPU

b ) You're not going to use the extra PCI-E lanes

and c ) You're not going to use the extra memory it allows you to run (nor buy a motherboard that supports more memory than Z97)
