pci express x16 extension cables worth it?

Go to solution Solved by W-L,

First off I would like to apologize if this topic has been discussed before, but I'm looking to get into making a custom mount for pc. This would include using 1 or 2 pci 16x expansion cables to get my graphic card(s) off my mobo.

1: Is there any testing that has been done as far as quality loss, I'm an avid gamer and wouldn't do this mod if I would see a significant loss in quality.

2: All I've been able to find so far is the standard guys such as this [http://www.amazon.com/PCI-E-Express-Extender-Flexible-Extension/dp/B008BZBFTG]. Is there anyone out there who knows of a better quality solution?

Thanks for any input!

I've seen many builds that have used risers and it's sometimes it's a hit and miss, in general they will work since it's a direct pin extension but some times for one reason or other it might not work under certain circumstances (usually really long extension), if it does work however there shouldn't be any issues if it is properly shielded, most time it's a bare ribbon cable with no shielding which can cause problems or instabilities with systems. One way to shield to to use aluminium tap/foil to tape over the cables.

Here's some general information on it and a case where shielding was required:
