So I have made a few threads involving this issue around this but I haven't directly asked the community. I have found what I have been saying is what I want a GTX 780 TI for way under $600. ($550) and this is in Canada, remarkable! and its not even a reference card. I am leaning toward the "its too much" and "not worth it" but ITS $200 OFF! and if weren't for having to buy a new power supply I think it would be ordered by now.

I play at 1440p I would like to eventually move up to 4k, but not sure if that will happen.

Despite the savings, am I better off to save my 550 and wait until it makes sense to take my 780ti out of my rig and put it on the used market and replace it with a GTX or RXX XXXX whatever is better next year, when there is a major performance difference?  I'm truly stuck- I don't game 24/7 and frankly I like games that use much power anyway, but one of my concerns, is will it be enough down the road. I will buy games that use more power in the future. I was not afraid to have to turn down settings to make my 780 ti work for 1440 for the longest amount of time, however I have got caught up (yet again) in this Ultra or nothing business.

My main concern regarding this addition is the cost. It is not where I thought I would be putting money. I thought I would save up and in a year or two I would need a cpu upgrade, another cost of $500. Then there is 4K a monitor again costing $500+. I really only want to spend $500 a year on my pc parts and a year for me is September to September as I'm still in school (so a new year just begun and last years total spending was over $1100  ) This is another thing, school I will hopefully be finishing up high school this year and going to Uni soon after and frankly I don't think at that point pc parts will be a big part of the budget, and so there is this part of mind that says make sure your PC will last at least 3/4 of your time at UNI while you have the money and aren't a broke college student. I have the money and I have a job, but I don't drive as of yet and so I have no real cost, most of my earnings just sit and it kinda makes me feel like I can afford this but in reality future costs and upgrades may be the better place for the money. I never thought a month ago I would add another 780 ti but now I have convinced myself that its a viable reason.

FYI: With Tax and a new 850W evga power supply I'm at about $700 and I will sell my current PSU, maybe bring the total cost to $650.

So please either support my "viable option" idea or give my head a shake. I already have a beastly ti, do I go for two or not bother because it doesn't sound like I need the power and financially isn't the best idea?

Thank you for your replies un advance, must actually go do English 12 work now.

I wouldn't bother. I'm in the same boat as you, kind of.

I wanted to get a 21:9 1440p monitor and 2 290's etc etc. Then I sat down and really thought about it...money is better spent on other things, or saved.

I, personally, am going to hold off any serious upgrades until DDR 4 cheaper, and SkyLake comes out (Intel's next CPU that's not a refresh, IIRC). So, 1080p and a 970 it is.

In your position I'd save up. School gets expensive and the less you have to work, the more you'll get out of it.

So what if you can't play at super high frame rates, I'd imagine your 780Ti can do pretty decently. A second one would be sweet, but is it worth almost a grand in cost to get that little boost?

Just save up, and by the time next year rolls around we should be able to play 4k games on a single high end card relatively easy.

Who knows. Maybe OLED will become a thing.

The reasoning my logical, non impulsive buyer side of brain was thinking but couldn't get heard due the irrational parts yelling $200 off!!!!! and you need 2 video cards! The amount of money I have spent because of this is a large sum - at least large for me.

Thanks

Haha, you're one of the people that falls for the knife and pot set deals, aren't you?

"Hmm, at Canadian Tire the Henkels knife sets are $700 off! Usually $899!!" When in reality no one ever, ever pays the full price. ;)

I get what you mean though.

Here's some food for thought.

Sell your 780Ti. Buy 2 970's. They're only like $340 each. Maybe less come Black Friday in the US.

OC. Enjoy.

Honestly though, they can pull in numbers on par with a 295x2. Should use way less power so you can probably get away with the same power supply.

IIRC you live in a pretty small town so you should be able to get even more for your graphics card than a person in the city.

LOL! Im only the person who falls for deals when I'm PC part shopping - or if its something I think I might want.

I have considered selling it and even buying 2 r9 290s and a new psu. The whole sell the one buy maxwell cards has crossed my mind and I will continue to debate this option as time on my side for this one kinda. Ill have to wait to see if AMD counters at all soon. maybe on Thursday???

My problem with selling though is that I will probably end up listing it selling it for $600 and taking $580 as the 980 is about $650 and 980 > 780 ti. Two new 970s are $850 im out a lot. Ill be regardless though. The longer I wait the less ill get for my 780 ti.

New plan, sell 780 ti soon and buy one 970 and buy second when price drops. Given temporarily ill loose maybe 10-15% if that and in the end gain 10% at additional $300 but not bad.

290's aren't nearly as good as the 970's, even at the price you can likely get them for.

I sure hope AMD releases something mind blowing in a couple days! I'm pretty excited to say the least. It'll be an extra long work day.

Just get them from the US? Then 2 970s are $700. You'd have sold your Ti for $575 let's say, so your investment is only $125 but you'll see upwards of a 50% improvement in fps.

You'll also easily surpass the refresh rate of your monitor. I imagine. Unless you got one of those OC beasts from Overlord.

Does that make you lean a little further towards the 970's? ;)

I don't think the 970's will drop anytime soon, they just came out.

290s don't make sense any more, I was just thinking about it over the summer.

State side shopping is a real pain, probably just bite the bullet buy here, just not all at once. Although I would just need a $40 off sale really. On two cards save $80 and the tax so around $100 there, That would bring me down from $850 to $750 - $575 and boom under $200 extra. Not bad at that point.

Still I would like to see some more dual 970 benchmarks vs dual 780 ti. And I will  have to look into power consumption some more, but it seems plausible. Definitely leaning this way almost falling down.

The real question if I sell the 780 ti is does the AIO and G10 come with or stay behind. :o

True, unless they have some killer Black Friday deals...then it might be worth it.

I find Stateside shopping more than worth it, but I tend to buy quite a bit of stuff over a wide range of categories. $1000 suits for $140 is too good to pass up!

Some computer parts are also just too good. I saved a friend ~30% on his last build.

The 780 Ti will come out on top, obviously, but honestly not by a huge margin. Then it gets absolutely destroyed in price to performance.

But, let's be honest...we both probably just look at the fps number ;)

Sell it! Then get the Corsair version.
