Network, Harddrive or Setting Issue

Hello I was fixing my friend's old laptop that was full of virus and pop-ups. It was windows Vista so I upgraded it to windows 8.1 in a complete wipe keeping nothing and almost everything is fixed. The one problem is that i cannot connect to facebook or google ,but websites like youtube, yahoo, ebay and amazon works. All other websites works. I check firewalls and control panel place those website under safe do no block setting. I looked all around(the best i could) for any type of setting that would affect it. I do not know all setting so there might be something i don't know about. There was a second drive that said it was system recovery and while installing windows 8 i didn't touch that at all so maybe a virus worked its way to that but how would i remove or wipe that drive? So i think it might be something with a hard drive? I also tried using internet explorer, firefox, and chrome.
