You've discovered what we try to explain here, that "surround" headsets don't offer anything more than stereo headphones + in-game headphone option. Maybe even less since headsets mostly suck.

You should start with a good open-backed headphone, such as the HD 518.

I don't know how I missed the thread earlier. I agree 100%.

ok so a new pair of headphones is what you suggest what about the sound blaster z will that make any improvements to the new headphones whatever I choose ??

The only real benefit if you decide to get one is that you get something called scout mode.

This is a hit and miss feature, which basically kills off all ranges of frequencies, except more common frequencies that are used for more important sound sources (footstep, gunshot).

This is not necessarily a sound quality improvement, more so of sound filtering to only hear what you need to hear.

But this feature in it self doesnt work THAT great.

Seems like scout mode would obviously be a sound quality de-provement (yes, now it's a word).

Scout mode isn't that new. I'm assuming if it's that good, it'd be more popular and widely talked about.

I wonder if they would let this be used in Comp if it worked. It does sound like cheating.

Well, most AAA shooters nowadays dont really allow sound play.

Casuals cant perform sound play, and will try everything in their power to not let others sound play.

Quake type shooter elitists snuff at sound play caz they cant nor do it in game.

Only game this is really useful now is CS series.

Anyway, for ultimate sound play, you can combine this with ASUS's sound HUD (dont know the proper name). It displays where sounds are coming from in a radar fashion.
