Use another lightweight distro that will support most gigabit ethernet chipsets out of the box, like Linux Lite.

Use the HP USB Disk Storage Format tool to fix your corrupted USBs. You can download and install the program here.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

If you mount the installation of an OS on a USB, they sometimes tend not to show up when you plug them in. Check if your USB is detected in your BIOS. If it is, then you should be able to restore it using the utility. You can also check disk management (in windows) or whatever disk utility program there is in Elementary OS to see if your USB is detected. You should also be able to repartition your USB in whatever disk utility program you have.

I run mint on my old laptop and it works great :)

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.

Use USBs. They're much faster to install and you can reuse them.

If the USB shows up in your BIOS, it's very likely you can fix it. Check in if the USB is listed under the disk utility program for Windows (disk management) or Elementary OS. Try running the program I provided a link to earlier on in this topic. I can't see how you can use a USB just once to install an OS and never be able to use it again. I've used a USB to install over 10+ operating systems from it and it works fine every time. I just give that program a run, select the USB, and then it's like new again.

Please at least try using the program before saying anything :)

Just tryin' to help ya.
