Router throttling connection

Hey,

 

I'm trying to set up a network at my new house. I have a 160Mbps connection coming into the house which is then split into 3 rooms. Then I want to split the connection again in my room to give myself a better wifi connection in my room and to split the Ethernet ports. However when route the connection through the router the speed drops to 40Mbps and the ping stays at a consistent 7ms. Is there anything I can do in the router settings to allow the full bandwidth to come through?

1st router: Virgin Media 2ac (made by netgear)

2nd router: Netgear WNR3500

To start, plug directly into the first router with an Ethernet cable and check the speed. Then plug directly into the second router to check the speed. Report back.
