I use one on my phone and can power full 3.5" hard drives with no external power, can use keyboards, mice etc.  YEs you can use that cable with a flash drive and view all the content on it. Might have download root explorer, astro file manager or some other file manager to see the stuff. But it will work with very little problem.

The file manager? Well my phone has a built in file manager that supports external devices really well. However I have always used root explorer for managing the android file system as opposed to the factory file management. So I just prefer root explorer, has more functions and works well most the time.

Oh and what kind of cables? like micro usb cable or w/e, the one i shown from amazon is cheap and probably crudely built, so are there any better more long lasting options?

Well if price doesn't matter I would go with this one. It even has an option for just the adapter if you don't want to deal with a cable, it's a little bit pricey but it's good quality.

If you want a more cheaper option consider this. It should work pretty well, but is probably lesser quality. Don't mind the negative reviews, not all devices support using an otg cable and the reviews that say it don't work just have a device that isn't supported. If you buy a decent tablet it should support the feature. The problem is not all micro usb ports output power, so when you plug a device in that needs power  it wont work. Not the cables fault, just the device. So whichever tablet you decide to go with do a little research or come ask us if it supports otg cables.
