R9 290 questions

Go to solution Solved by Razzaa,

Hi

I'm planning to get the R9 290 soon (probably MSI) and I have some questions about it. My system has the i5-4690 and a 550w XFX PSU, for 1080p gaming.

First of all, can I run it in terms of power consumption ? The MSI site says 250W which is okay with my PSU, so it should run normally, right ?

Also, do you recommend it ? I know it's great value compared to the GTX 780, but do you think it's wise to go with a card that's been around for almost a year, especially with the expected announcement of the 900 series from Nvidia and probably the Rx 300 from AMD ? Will it support DX12 or only partially ? (I really don't wanna wait for the next generation of cards as they won't be available in my country for months after their release)

Thanks :D

I have the same PSU with a heavily overclocked reference MSI 290 and I have no issues with it. I probably spend at least 2hrs a day running fire strike, valley and playing BF4. My clocks are at 1150 core and 1500 mem. You will not have any power issues.

Power consumption shouldn't be an issue.

I do recommend it as a value card, but I say if you can afford it - go for the next one up.

As far as potentially waiting for a new card to come out, I'd have to ask you a couple questions - Are you willing to wait?, and do you think you'll need anything better than an r9 290 any time soon for what you do?

Also, I don't think cards ever only "partially" support a DX or OpenGL mode. You shouldn't have anything to worry about on that front.

I heard that MSI cards can get toasty (Something about the Twin Frozr not very well optimized for Hawaii GPU's). If you get R9 290 then straight up get the Sapphire Tri-x.

I think the power consumption "might" be a problem. I don't know, the power could spike up here and there and when running a benchmark.

Thanks for your answers :D

According to most tdp calculators it should be fine for power consumption I think...They all show the system needs 450W so even if it spikes a bit above that it's still fine... I picked this PSU instead of a 650W OCZ one because it's more efficient and should be sufficient for my gpu.

As for dx12 I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it does have newer features which require a hardware set, and that's not available in any of the current GPUs unless they included it and hid it.

You can't be serious.  Hyperthreading is a market joke?

How's the performance of the card ? I'm really excited to buy it.

Its an absolute beast!! Slaughter anything on 1080p thats for sure. I play everything turned all the way up with no issues. Mine is paired with a 4790k. I score around 10,600 in Fire strike and 2800 in valley extreme HD.

Im almost positive this gen high end cards will support dx12 minus some minor features so I wouldn't worry about that.
