HD6970's problems

What can cause a graphics card to not output to the display. For example 2 6970's not in crossfire, connect 6970 number 1 in the PC and it works fine, remove and connect 6970 number 2 and nothing is shown on the display, the fan still spins.

 

Also is it possible that i could still use a graphics card that doesnt show anything on display as a second card for crossfire and use perfectly working one in slot 1 to output to display?

Have you tried other outputs on the card?

 

It's possible that only the outputs are problematic and it may still run in CF, you'd just have to test it.
