All you need to do for a new install using a hard drive from a previous build is tto install the mb drivers and all of the new device drivers. Mignt have to go into safe mode to do this witch is F8 keyy when windows is starting. From the menu select Safe Mode with Networking. Install all motherboard drivers then reboot in normal mode and install the rest of the drivers.

After all drivers is installed go to Windows updates to complete your new build drivers and software updates.

Ive got a similar question. My mates laptop has carked it and he wants to get his iTunes music off the hard drive. I havnt seen the problem so im not too sure how far he gets when turning it on.

So.. Could I put his laptop HDD into my 650D's hotswap bay and retrieve the data?

Cxz, you are incorrect about the key, I have transferred at least 8 pre built pcs windows 7 licences to custom built machines. The only issue that can occur is it randomly asking you to verify over the phone(1/8 did this) in which you explain you had a hardware replacement to fix the machine. After that everything is seamless.

well im already getting a new computer i just dont want to spend 100+ dollars on a new OS its not in my budget
Well I personally have never had a pc die on me' date=' but from what I have heard Microsoft might be able to supply you a new key or something to make your windows work. Wait you just bought a new pc, so windows will already come with it? If all else fails you can convert to Linux...only reason I keep windows around is that some games run better, because they are not native to linux. [/quote']

Do not need a new key. I'm a registered Microsoft VAR partner. As long as he didn't format the HD from the previous built. If for some reason you having problems with current key. Activate it by phone, not online. Follow the instrucions that the phone call gives.
