Funky posting

My ram wouldn't post in a1 b1 or a2 b2 but it will post in a2 b2 as two sticks. With one stick it will post in only a2 or b2. I put in another pair of sticks and those would post in a1 b1 so i assumed i had faulty ram. Went to go exchange them for a new pair but when i tried those the same thing happened. Not too sure what to do from here... any suggestions?
