Weird boot problems (Windows 7)

Not sure if this is the right place but its the best I could find, anyway..

 

For around the last week or so whenever I boot my PC I am greeted by this ( )%C2'> saying that Windows cant connect to the System Event Notification Service. I tried everything I could think of such as running a system restore and checking said service was started in services.msc, as well as every solution I could find online but with no luck. This has persisted for about a week like I said, but then starting yesterday afternoon whenever I boot into Windows instead of displaying the Aero effects on the taskbar/startmenu the old style class taskbar/startmenu are shown, and the other Aero themes are greyed out. I have also exhausted everything I can think of for solving this, using the Aero troubleshooter, system restore, etc. but once again no luck. The whole time I've been having these issues the boot time has been increased to around 5 minutes until desktop responsiveness, and the whole system has just felt generally slower and having some serious lags when doing simple stuff like opening Chrome. Weirdly, explorer.exe has also crashed a few times while experiencing these issues too. 

 

I understand I have a few issues so even if only one is olved that would be fantastic. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated, thanks

Hey, not really a wrong place no. I've came here for help on some OS issue last week and got assisted quite promptly.
 
I'm not so sure on System Event Notification Service, might have to wait for some genius to stumble upon the thread, I'm pretty much a dumb dumb.
 
BUT, have you tried to use Microsoft's Fix It tool for your Aero issue? Here's the link to that for Aero disabling http://support.microsoft.com/mats/aero_effects_not_working

Firstly I would suggest a plain re-install. It is not that much of a hassle if you know what you are doing. It is the one thing that will most likely fix all you problems. 

It would also help if you listed the things you found online.

Have tried doing a clean boot yet?

Yeah I forgot to mention that, try a clean install too, just back up important files. Recovering from a backup will probably bring all the problems back. If you have a manufacturers recovery disc, best bet, super easy.

Hmm strange, the Fix It tool is reporting that my graphics card (GTX 560Ti) doesn't support Aero yet has worked for almost 3 years just fine, I'll check for driver updates etc. in a minute. And I have already tried that Microsoft Community thread with no luck. As regards the other things I have found online, it was mostly just things found on the first page or 2 of Google by searching 'windows cannot connect to the System Event Notification Service'. I have tried a clean boot but I'll try again just in case.

 

I've never done a re-install so I'll have to look into that, though one thing to mention is that this was a pre-built system that I got in 2011 (I am looking into building a new one, but I'm a 17y/o full time student without a job so money isn't the easiest to come by) so I don't have the windows disc.

Most pre-built PCs that don't come with a disc would most likely have a recovery image or partition for you to recovery your computer with. I think my pre-built HP had me mash F11 on boot, though don't quote me on what key to press, they vary from system to system.

 

 

My HP Desktop is pre-built, just with some minor hardware upgrades like RAM GPU etc, HDD I didn't touch, and I have a forever there recovery partition in the event I *@ things up.

If you get the OEM code from the sticker on the PC you can do a format and re-install, then just activate using that code, if you can't then don't do it yet, you will lose your key if you don't do it properly. NOTE: don't use the code that you can read from windows itself, you cannot enter it. You will have to do the phone verification to activate the key.

Also you can get a ISO file from Microsoft to do the re-install. You will need an empty DVD or a normal USB to create the installer onto. (5Gb or more should do, but I am not sure). You can find several guides for this online, I suggest using those instead of relying on my memory of the process.

Just google Windows 7 trial and you should find the file you need. Ill try searching for the link now and edit it in.

EDIT2: Also, good luck with your first re-install if you decide to do it. It may seem daunting at first but a simple assist that can go miles is to create a list (on a piece of paper) with all the program you need and want. Have it ordered to make the process faster, you can also pre-download some installers so you wont be limited that way. (Personally I have a folder on my HDD that contains almost every installer I ever downloaded.)

Go to BIOS > boot options > boot priority > set the install device as priority 1.

I don't know what Mobo you have, so it could be a little different.

Yeah figued it out thanks, and I have some crappy proprietary dell mobo since this machine was prebuilt but it was easy enough to find once in the bios. Had a few rookie hiccups but I figured out what I was doing wrong through trial and error. On the last step of installing now so I'll update once I'm actually able to use my PC again.

Well, I've have enough time to install at least the required drivers (such as video drivers etc.) and so far everything seems to be fixed, and the system loads much faster as well as being much more responsive!

Might want to mark this thread as solved. As for the hiccups you had, sorry I wasn't on to help out, but it's always good to play with things and figure things out on your own, helps you learn Glad your problem is solved.
