so i just bought a graphics card recently (r9 290) the tri-x from sapphire ,

a recent video from linus showed that on bf4 on ultra setting the fps was at 88 on a 1080p screen ,

im currently testing that out and found the my highest fps was 67 and on some maps my fps drops to as low as 42

is this normal or is the graphics card defected

(i am also using a 1080p monitor)

Settings and scenario could be different. Benchmarks are usually done with an easily repeatable scenario that tries to be a realistic example of gameplay. Different maps, lighting conditions and in some cases gamemodes can affect FPS. (64 player TDM and that prison level is pretty hard on GPU's)

You could however expect the same or nearly close performance provided that you have the same exact system specs used in the review.

But, you'll most likely get something lower, depends really. You could expect more if you've installed a performance driver that's newer than the one in the review.

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

unless your system was the same as Linus', then you will get different resluts. even internet connection could play a role in this as well. the gpu is only one part of the machine.

There are a lot of factors. Plus I think Linus OC's all the graphics cards. Not a huge change but will still give you more FPS. Also they benchmark in single player campaign. When you play online your FPS drops a lot. I think they are also using i7. Also if you are using the preset ULTRA that uses AA I don't think they ran the benchmark with AA on. I would try a ULTRA custom setting with AA off and see what you get. Also like I said with a game like BF4 your CPU plays a big role. I have a 8530 and just OC'ed it and got a pretty decent FPS bump.

What is your CPU?

42 seems pretty low you should be up in the 90s what's the rest of the build

my cpu is intel i5 4690k

mobo is msi z97-g55 sli

Are all drivers on your GPU up to date?  CPU Overclocked at all?

run a 3dmark benchmark to see if it's up to snuff. Could just be some poorly optimized game code.

yea i just this built 3 weeks ago so all the drivers are the latest, also my cpu is overclocked automatically meaning it runs at 3.90 when needed

what software would i use for that

Are you using XMP?

im not sure what that is exactly , so probably no ?

When you got the drivers, did you use the  AMD website or the DVD that came with your card? Also, turbo boost isn't quite the same as overclocking.

Use 3DMark like he said...

And yeah, XMP overclocks your RAM to its rated speed. If you're not using it, your RAM is running at 1333MHz.

where do i get xmb for the ram ?

So I just ran Firestrik with my (at the moment) stock i5 2500k and got 8617 as result. So that should be fine what you got there.

My FPS never dips below 50 though, which is really weird that yours go that low. I monitor this often, because I play around with overclocks and 42 is very low. That's what I got with my old 7950 boost.....

Oh I play at 1080p Ultra preset, so I guess same settings in BF4.

My complete Firestrike results:

8617 with AMD Radeon R9 290(1x) and Intel Core i5-2500K Processor

Graphics Score 11059
Physics Score 6136
Combined Score 4206

EDIT: XMP are profiles you can activate in your bios. My RAM will run at 1333, but when I bought it it said 1600. I just have to enter the BIOS and activate the XMP profile for 1600 (the ones working with your RAM will be shown) and I get faster RAM. You can't activate higher XMP profiles than activated by the manufacturer.

EDIT2: You could monitor what your CPU and GPU do during those heavy fps dips. If you see CPU spikes during the dips, you probabaly have issues with core parking. I experienced that with my old mobo too.

Scores look okay I think, though the graphics score is almost 200 lower than @mapegl... XMP is a setting in the BIOS/UEFI. Note that it does count as a overclock and technically voids warranty. Look at a Haswell overclocking guide first!

when i go to bios it says on the top current ram frequency is 1866mHz , is that not correct and i have to do manually ?

im really a noob so i dont know how to get my ram to run at 1866 also , am i over clocking the ram this way ?

so changing the ram speed to its advertised speed is overclocking and voids warranty?

No, you just have to enable it to run at its advertised speed.  Most RAM will run at 1600Mhz when plugged in, you have to manually enable the XMP profile to get it to its advertised speeds.  I know my 2400Mhz kit ran at 1600mhz before I enabled XMP.

XMP should be on the very first page of your BIOS, just select it to be enable profile #1.

There are different kinds of profiles. Either XMP or PnP profiles. I actually just ordered RAM which works with those PnP ones and it will just run at highest supported speed which is 1866 in that case. XMP has to be activated manually. Can't really say what is better, never had PnP before.

I have to activate XMP in the OC menu of my ASUS mobo

If it runs at 1866, you are fine. Just check CPU-Z. It shows half your actual speed, so 933 Mhz....at least it should.
