Important Concerns about Storage Solution, advise

Tech Lover

hi. i have some questions,

pls advise me

u can see my current config. my main drive is WD caViar Green 1tb and another 3tb green drive. both of them are almost full now.

u might ask what i store here, well, its mostly movies and pics and videos i take with my camera. (no pornos at all btw, lol)

any how, my questions are as follow,

1- should i get Seagate Barracuda?  is this 7200RPM drive? here is the link? http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop-7200RPM-128MB-Cache/dp/B00JBJ34WC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409148932&sr=8-1&keywords=seagate+6tb

2- are there any other good 7200RPM drives that u can suggest? i like WD cause of its silence but anyother brand will be good. i need 7200RPM drive and the capacity should be 4Tb or above. even 3Tb would be fine,. not below 3Tb.

3- are these 6Tb drives any good? i mean in terms of reliability.

i have another question, in these fairly recent laptops, like a year or 2 year old laptops, is there an option to install 2 Hard disks like in older laptops where one can swap out the dvd rom and install another laptop hard drive? is it possible in the newer laptops? im asking this cause i will be getting a laptop soon. im getting the 256Gb model of Samsung 850 Pro. and i know that will not be enough for my storage needs in the laptop. so can we install another hard drive in laptop like Desktop?

1. Yes

2. No

3. I've heard that they're not as reliable as e.g. 2TB drives.

It is possible in some, but not the cheapest ones.

Does your machine run all the time? If so, then the Seagate NAS drives are better options (I have a few, they're great). WD Reds are also an option if you want lower-power, quieter drives.

The reliability with the new high-capacity drives is fine. They won't release drives that don't meet certain standards, unless something big slipped by their QA teams (which generally doesn't happen).

thanks for ur advice. my machine does not run like all the time, but yeah it runs for like not ALL the time but it runs for like at least 10 to 12 hours a day.

what is NAS? sorry i really dont know much about it. i just need a drive that can perform optimally and which should be faster than at least 5400RPM green drives.

from my experience of like 6 years of experience with these, i find these to be good only for videos and music and data. NOT GAMES! i have had this 1 TB Green drive since 2009 and its been like at least a year it started giving up on me. now its about to die. its at the end of its life. i get HUGE like 20 second straight JAMMING of all the OS, i cant even move the mouse cursor. and BF4 started giving me horrible stutters. i thought its my GPU but nah... its my drive. its dead. any ways.

can u suggest me a fast and reliable drive? i have never used SEAGATE drive before. i had an external drive 500Gb Seagate drive that i got as a gift. it was seal packed and brand new. when i opened the wrap and plugged it in PC and transferred like only few Gigs of data to transfer to another PC sitting next to mine, when i plugged it to the other one it was DEAD. it didnt read. i got the "parameter is incorrect" error.

but i have read a lot good about their internal HDD. should i get this 6Tb one or any older 3 or 4 Tb barracuda? are they any good? i really like WD BLUE cause of its specs but again it only offers 1Tb. that would only take up space in the system to install a few.

do u suggest to get this Seagate one or can u suggest me any other brand which offer 7200RPM with nice reliability? ANY brand would be fine.

thanks

The Seagate NAS drives are a line of HDDs they sell that are optimized for operation in dedicated storage boxes. If this is going in your main PC, you can get away with just a Seagate Desktop drive (less expensive).

If you need 6TB of space, I recommend getting two 6TB WD Red drives and running them in RAID1. It will cost more, but losing 6TB of data would be hard to recover from.

If you need 3 or 4 TB then you can probably get away with a single 3 or 4TB Seagate Desktop drive. If you want to be extra safe, get two 3 or 4TB NAS drives and run them in RAID1.

I wouldn't ever run a 6TB drive without some sort of redundancy.

Hi there,

Choosing the right HDD depends on the usage. It seems to me that you can check the WD Black, which covers your requirements for RPM and storage capacity. Keep in mind, that it comes with 5 years limited warranty. I leave you some more details below.
NAS (Network Attached Storage) is basically a storage that you can access remotely, within your network or outside it. It was stated that the WD Red drives are perfect for NAS, which is totally correct, but I am not sure you need this kind of device.
Talking about RAIDs and drives in RAID1, I think it is a bit too much for your case, but it is up to you. Getting two drives in RAID1 will cut you storage capacity by two and you will have the chance to rebuild if one of the drives fails. If you need safety and data backups, I would advise you to get one external drive and do scheduled backups.
About the laptops, I would let the community give you an advice, but it seems to me that most of the laptops offer space for only one storage drive. Removing the DVD ROM might be possible, buy I would wait for someone more experienced to give you an advice about that.

Hope I helped

I would choose the WD2003FZEX drive. In fact, your suggestion is absolutely correct. The WD2003FZEX is a 2013 model and may perform better than the older version. It is not only name difference, you may get better performance. Anyways, both of them are a pretty solid choice for a high performance drive.
