Hello audio experts,

I want a completly new audio setup, currently I use a Gamecom 780 and that´s it, so obviously I want to upgrade a bit and I was wondering what I could get for around 200-250 USD (150-200€).

I thought of something like Audiotechnica ATH-M50x or Beyerdynamic DT 990 etc., the problem is that I don´t know what the difference between those is and particularly between all those Beyerdynamic DT versions, and also IDK if more Ohm is better or worse.

And then I need also a microphone, I was thinking of a Samson Meteor maybe, but Idk if it fits in my budget, depends on my headphones.

Or I choose a headset, but I don´t really know of any that will deliver really good sound in this price range.

Thanks in advance.

Cheeky Leo

Audio Technica M50X are great. However if you prefer a more flat sound (meaning unmodified direct sound that comes from the source) the M40X might be a better option (good bit cheaper too). Those paired with an Antlion ModMic 4.0 will work great. There is a massdrop for the modmic on at the moment: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/antlion-modmic-4

Thanks a lot that is a nice start, are the M50x or M40 on ear or around ear? If on ear what is the best Beyerdynamic choise?

How is the build quality of all the products, the problem is that I live near a small town in germany and can´t really try any things out before buying them.

The M50X and the M40X have amazing build quality, they are closed ear design. Im not super sure about Beyerdynamic products but ive heard pretty good stuff about the DT 770 PROs. However I can only vouch for the build quality and sound quality of the M50X/M40X

Ok thanks a lot, since the Massdrop thingy has 7 days left, I will wait and think over it again, so I don´t rush things.

Sure.

One more question, sorry for bothering you.

Is there any alternative to the Microphone in the same price range?

But I saw Linus´ video on the Antlion and I´m pretty impressed, just wondering if there is anything comparble in this price range.

V-Moda's BoomPro is "similar" but not all headphones have a removable cable system compatible with it.

AntLion's pretty much paving the way for truly universal boom mics, but you could always ghetto mod some cheap mics in various ways.

There are also desktop mics like the Blue Mic Snowflake, but they are gonna pick up other sounds and are horrible if you have blue switches. Id stick with the mod mic.

Looks good, but I dont think the ATH-M50x aren´t compatible because they have on the locking mechanism side a 2,5mm instead of a 3,5mm headphone jack.

Grab the samson or a mod mic no matter which you would pick.

If you get the DT 990 you'll need to pick up a headphone amp.

If you want something without a headphone amp see if you can grab 770's or 880's in 80 ohms or below. I would skip the m50's and m40's if you need to save some cash.

Good alternatives are the sennheisier range (HD 518) or the AD700x from audio technica.

Is it better to have more or fewer ohms?

So my situation right now:

Audio Technica ATH-M50X 131€ atm

vs

Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80 Ohm 135€ atm

or

Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro 135 €

To make it clear, I don´t really want them to be portable, just comfortable, a long cable and sound really good for the money.

With the Beyerdynamics I´m not really sure if I should go with semi-closed of closed design. What are the advantages of those two designs?

EDIT: As a microphone I´ll definetly take the AntLion ModMic 4.0

Really? Is there no way using them without one? Or do they just sound terrible then?

You can use them without an amp, but they'd be too quiet for most people. Could always try them off onboard before buying an amp to be sure.

You can still use them but it probably won't get loud enough which means they won't sound good.

Thanks a lot guys, so I read a few more reviews and I´ll probably take the 770 over the M50x, because I want it to be as comfortable as possible.

Does anyone know how the sound compares between both?

Without getting into details the 770 sounds better to me. You can look up graphs for it but the 770 has smoother bass and less recessed mids.

Fairly close, but all Beyerdynamics have a treble spike which you'll either love or hate.

Again thanks guys.
