Headset Mute not working

Hi, I was hoping I could get an explanation to a wierd problem me and my friend have been having.

 

We both have different headsets, he has the Steelseries Siberia Frost and I have some Astro A40's.

 

For a long time, when he mutes his mic, I can faintly still hear him.

Recently when I mute my mic he has been able to hear me.

 

I was wondering if there was some specific reason why headset mics may not actually mute themselves.

The signal from the audio cables are crossfeeding onto the mic cables. Common issue with no easy fix.
