hey guys,

I recently upgraded my cpu/mb/hs with:

AMD-8350 Vischera

ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0

Cosrair H60

16GB RAM (ripjaws)

currently I am running a HIS iceqx2 7970.. and I am thinking it is time to upgrade... What do you guys recommend? I was looking at the 780.. the price is steep, but I am curious to see what you all think/recommend. My current games do not seem to be running very optimal, and quite laggy.. I think it is because of my GPU.

Monitors:

27" asus (HDMI)

23" samsung (DVI)

I thought the 7970 was pretty damn good card? Am I missing something, it just might be the numbering scheme AMD/ ATI uses. Anyway, if those monitors are 1080p there's not much of a point. If they are a higher resolution than yes a 780 is a good GPU. If you don't need the Nvidia specific features you could also just get an R9 290 as well.

Would always recommend a Sapphire R9 290(x). I read/heard it's an excellent card for the price and Sapphire does the best cooling in my opinion. Feel free to donate me one in case you consider buying one. :P

The 290/290X is a great card, but not good enough to warrant an upgrade from what is essentially a 280X.

+1. You'll just be wasting money if you upgrade now.

The issue is, I lag when playing archeage, and I also lag when playing dayz. It bugs the heck out of me... I dont know where the issue seems to be. I have dedicated fiber (85D/45U) to my house.... and there is no reason why I should be lagging.

DayZ can't run on anything lol.

Archeage is still in beta. Plus it's an MMO, which tend to be more CPU bound and regardless will always lag if there's a lot of people in one area.

If you play at 1080P your 7970 is pretty much maxing out your FX CPU...so i'd stay put if i were you because it will bottleneck the R9 290 or GTX 780 in many games (tested myself i ran an FX-8320@4.6GHZ along with 780 and it was bottlenecking at 1080P in many games...) BUT if you play higher resolution or multi-monitor then the R9 290 (non X) is the best next step-up even though it's only about 35% faster than 7970.

I'd say you should consider playing on slightly lower settings and start saving money for next series of GPU and a new intel processor.

EDIT: just rode what you've said and the games you've mentionned are indeed in fact CPU dependant and the lag is due to the poor per core performance of the FX CPU, not your GPU.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

Welp... then I guess it is time to overclock.
