I'm looking for some of those world-renowned tech tips.

I've built myself a Mini-ITX computer just because I've always wanted to and I've run into an issue here. When I power on my computer, either inside or outside the case, I get 5 short beeps. Sometimes I get nothing at all which is weird, but all I know for certain is I've never gotten a single short beep.

I've looked up this error code and it says CPU error or something similar. Sounds like a real issue. Odd part is, everything works "fine". I can see all the components are recognized by the BIOS, RAM is all there, GPU is working, CPU registers correctly. I've even ignored the beeping and alreay installed Windows, drivers, and all the updates.

The only thing that gives credence to the possibility of an issue with the CPU is what I would call tragic thermals.

Even idling in UEFI, my CPU temp will slowly climb to 50-something C. This is a problem.

I must say this was not unexpected as I realized much too late I borked the installation of my CPU cooler. But I have reinstalled it twice (borked it again, but less so, then got it right) but my temps are still a nightmare.

I can't figure out what to do next. I've pretty much tried everything already aside from reseating the CPU.

Specs are as follows:

Mobo: AsRock FM2A88X ITX+

CPU: Athlon 760K

RAM: Vulcan 8GB 1600MHz

GPU: Radeon 6670 (Cheapo card had lying around. Needed to install it to see what I was doing)

PSU: EVGA 430W 80+ (Bronze?)

Case: Cool Master Elite 120 "advanced"

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9a

I realize horrible thermals would be expected looking at this list of poor choices, but not THIS bad.

I've read that it might be a BIOS problem, or having a non-APU processor in a board basically built for nothing else. But I've flashed the BIOS to the mosty recent 2.4 and still have this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe the newest version of the bios still hasn't resolved the issue. Have you look to see if others have had the same problem?

Whats your ambient room temperature?

I'm sorry but every time I look at your profile I can't help but think about this:

Perhaps. I looked for other people with this problem but not too hard. Would AsRock tech support be able to answer this one? Might give them a call tomorrow.

About 22C Maybe higher. Lot of computers in a small room.

WOAH. I just got a wild hair up my ass and looked at the specs for the cooler. Says it has a max RPM of 2500 (1800 with LNA). What does LNA mean? I've only seen my fan go up to 1500 something regardless of what mode I put it on.

Lna is the Low Noise Adapter. its a short fan cable that has a resister to reduce the voltage it receives.

Alright. So I actually reseated the CPU. I also undervolted the processor and ramped up the fan speed to max at all times. Even at 2500 RPM, that Noctua is quite silent, and I don't really care about noise anyways.

All this and it is idling stable at 36C. I think I can live with these temps.

The things I still don't like is no beeping. At all anymore. I don't even get the 5 now. Just silence then the UEFI. At what point should I consider buying a 40 dollar APU just to see if this problem persists? I read the 760K is quite a toasty processor elsewhere on the internet so I really doubt I can chalk this one up to manufacture problem.

Also, just for shits and giggles I tried to flip the fan on the cooler. Don't ever do this. It's apparently MUCH better to blow cool air down than exhaust hot air up.

Okay...final update: I have discovered, while looking up various beep codes and their meaning, that the BIOS manufacturer of my board is AMI. AMI does not have a "Everything is fine" single beep. Silence is their "Everything is fine" and silence is what I get.

So basically there is no longer an issue.Everything is fine. ALthought the temperature sensors are messed up though. Running Prime95, Speccy says 86C while Speedfan says 49C.

I PROMISE I'M NOT STUPID. SORRY FOR WASTING YOUR BANDWIDTH, LINUS!
