I use OwnCloud. Works well. I run it on a virtual machine with Hyper-V in WIndows 8. This allows me:

-> If I re-install my system, I don't need to worry about OwnCloud, it's under VM

-> The VM runs on the back at startup automatically, and I don't see it.

-> When I reboot, the VM does a save state, and resumes after back in Windows.

-> I can transfer it. Meaning if I upgrade my system, I just need to transfer the virtual disk, and I am back up and running.

I would recommend you to do the same if you don't have a dedicated system like myself. You do need a lot of RAM in your system.. RAM you are ready to loose as you'll be running a second Windows on the back, basically (or Linux, but Hyper-V operates best with Windows).
