Local Network Video Playback Help

So my Dad has film collection on his pc, which is hardwired and in the home office. He wants to plug his laptop (Mac OS X Mavericks) into his TV to watch the films from his PC. So we have the file mounted as a network location, but to open the video take's a long time. I presume this is down to to QuickTime or VLC opening the network file rather than streaming it.

So my question is, how can I stop this long waiting period and just stream the video from his pc, on the mac to the TV? Ideally without running a Plex server on the PC.

Thanks

Hmmm. I have never had any issues with streaming films over a network like that before allthough I have always done it from Windows to Windows. I'm guessing his pc is a windows pc and not OSX?

it could be a compatability issue. Is it hard wired all the way or do you connect through wireless on the laptop?
