2wire gateway troubles

i'm trying to reconfigure a 2wire gateway so then it doesn't have any wireless, and then hook up a more powerful router such as a netgear nighthawk or so, but the trouble is coming from hooking up the router as an access point i was testing this with the Linksys WRT54GV8, since i had one on-hand and couldn't get wifi from the gateway to the external router which was broadcasting a signal just didn't provide internet. Is there any special way to configure the external router to get this to work that i just don't know about?
