Just remove the shroud and clean it the best you can. Don't remove the heat sink unless you plan on replacing the thermal paste.

All right, i've got an old HD 5770 that needs to be disassembled to get rid of the dust. However, i have no extra thermal paste with me so i was wondering if it was safe to detach the fan and heatsink on the GPU to clean it without wiping any old thermal paste off, then re-attach the heatsink and fan. Will it be safe?
