Refurbished PSU?

Go to solution Solved by dalekphalm,

So if i confirm it's been examed by corsair, and not just plugged in and foudn to be working. I should be good?

I would think so yes. Ideally you'll want to physically check the unit for a QA sticker of some sort, but as long as the retailer selling it clearly states who refurbished the unit (the manufacturer, the retailer, or a 3rd party refurbisher), the warranty you get, and who is providing it, then you should be totally good. If they don't state that information, then I would strongly consider contacting them for verification first before making the purchase.

But yeah man, if you can save a bunch of money, as long as it meets the requirements I've laid out, then you'll be totally fine.

If something goes wrong, you may have that 2.5 year warranty to cover the PSU, but if it takes any of your other parts with it, well you won't be boasting on about that $160 you saved.

I tend to not buy stuff which has been used by anyone else, ever. But reading on refurbished items, seems like they are good as new, and seeing how i can get a Corsair RM850, for 160$ cheaper than retail with 2.5 years warranty, it's tempting...

Should i go for it?

Is the warranty offered by Corsair, or by a third party refurbisher?

Frankly, if the warranty is provided by Corsair, then go for it. I'm using a refurbished Linksys E4200v1 Router as well as a refurbished Corsair gaming Mouse, and both looked immaculate and brand new when I opened the box. Both came with a warranty (I opted to purchase an extended 3 year warranty from NCIX because it was like $10 for each item or something).

With a PSU, it is important not to cheap out on it, but honestly, 99% of refurbished items are simply open box returns. People decided they didn't like it, or it wasn't sufficient for their build, or they opted to go with something cheaper. In many cases they've never even been installed or used by the original purchaser. These types of returns go back to the manufacturer, get re-tested and validated, then stuck into a new box as "refurbished".

I trust Corsair to perform the same testing, validation, and QA on a refurbished unit that it does on a factory new unit.
