I have a really quick question: Do I need a z97 motherboard for a core i5 4690?

no you can use any LGA1150 motherboard but if you have not got the CPU i would recommend you get the 4690k version so you can overclock if you want to in the future plus its around the same price as the 4690

no, you only need an LGA 1150 socket, but it's definitely worth it to spring for one, and if i were you i'd get the 4690k even if you're not overclocking, that way you can always have someone do it for you later or something

For an i5-4690 non K, you will also be totaly fine with an H97 board.

 

a Z97 would basicly not realy benefits you, unless you ever think about going Sli, then you will need a Z97.

Some h97 boards still have some OC options available too.

Throw a K in there at a later date if your keen down the track.
