I have a Lenovo y570 with a 750 GB HDD and a 32Gb mSata SSD (used for caching - not sure how much that works)

I am thinking of getting a new msata, so that I can install the OS on and the main programs

I can get a:

120GB mSata (cheaper solution) it will be only for OS and some applications

240GB Sata (more expensive) it will allow me to have OS and a few games/media files

(will get a sata-to-usb adaptor and use my current HDD as external)

240GB mSata (more expensive (not my much)) it will allow me to have OS and quite some games (media files on HDD)

(much more convenient)

I was tilting towards 240GB mSata SSD, as I was thinking that Ι can have it for my next laptop as well (in 2-3 years maybe). However, with M.2 coming along will that be an option in a couple of years?

another solution is to remove the optical drive and get an SSD in there that I can definitely move to my next build

Get a regular SSD. You will always be able to use that.

mSATA is something you usually can't put into a desktop.

Also get a 240 or 250GB SSD. That way you can use the provisioning feature and expand the lifespan of your ssd and you will have anough space. Also when moving this SSD to a different system you would hate to put something as small as 128gb into a higher end system.

Thank you for the response!

there is a chance that my next computer will be a laptop, so msata will be an option IF available at that time. (opinions on that matter?)

also, if I get a Sata SSD, should I replace my 750GB HDD (I currently use about 340 GB, which I can reduce to 200 I guess) or should I replace the optical drive, thus having an SSD and a HDD? (how expensive/hard would replacing the optical drive be?)

Usually replacing an optical drive is no issue. really depends on your laptop. Lenovo is usually great with that kinda stuff. I have a Lenovo as well as my brother, and he replaced his optical for an SSD as well. I think he needed an adapter though....not sure.

If that Laptop is your only machine, I would go for the SSD and HDD option. You won't need that optical anyways. I don't have one in my Laptop and neither in my desktop.

will a Sata SSD/HDD be better than an mSataSSD/HDD

having a mSata SSD will be better (and simpler) for me

(from what I understand I will not see a major difference between the two systems)

my main concern is whether the mSata SSD will be usable in a laptop in 2 to 3 years

I'd rather save a few dollars (or rather pounds  :P )

update:

I actually checked the prices now. it seems that having an mSata SSD will be about 10 pounds more expensive, about as much as the caddy for the optical drive bay.

but still, if possible I would like opinions on the mSata port for the future
