I am currently looking to do some game and video capture work.

My current system is rockin' a Core i7-4770K, 16 GB of Kingston Hyper X Blu RAM, an R9-290 reference card, and the virtual equivalent of 2TB of mechanical and 256 GB of Solid State Storage.

Considering the strength of my GPU, I would like to identify software-based capture solutions. Preferably free, but I am willing to pay, though I am open to all feasible options.

Just use AMD's GVR, you can record, take screenshots and even stream with it. You get a decent amount of customisation with the quality and there is a minimal performance hit even at 1080p, 60 fps with a 50Mb/s bit rate.

Edit:

You could also use MSI Afterburner which is also free, though it takes a larger hit on performance ou can monitor your system and tweak your GPU. It also yeilds better looking videos with a 15-18Mb/s bit rate increase over GVR.

Thanks for the tip. My concern with GVR was the 10 minute recording limit (Unless that's not a thing anymore).

I've got multiple video recordings over 10 minutes, two of which are about 17 minutes long, so you'll be fine with that. Also just try and record a bit longer than you want to as at the end for a couple if seconds there is a little badge thing saying "Recorded with RAPTR" and I think it'd look better without it. Just wanted to make you aware of that :D, hope you get everything running smoothly soon.
