What sound card do you have? Right click your quick launch icon for sound and choose playback devices. Make sure the speakers are chosen as default device and configured for 5.1 surround sound.

U need to understand, Music is stereo so they will come throw Front Speakers, try playing some games like Crysis or a newer DVD. U will hear 5.1 surround. & also make sure that u setup your sound manager well. Most common motherboards have Realtek HD manager, double click it & set to 5.1 on speaker config section, & also right click on volume icon on task bar & click playback device & set it to Realtek Audio.  Hope that helps.
