Hi this is my first post on here :D

I have a RM daulserv that I purchased off of eBay about a year ago , about 6 months ago I went to turn it on for the first time and it had a pirated version of windows vista on it so I quickly installed a copy of Ubuntu on it . it went through the whole installation fine and I was using it for about an hour when it suddenly cut out I tried turning it back on again but it did not work so the next day I knocked the power button and it booted up fine then was on for about half an hour before it cut out again does anybody know what the problem might be

P.s sorry if I have posted in wrong section

Diagnosing these kind of problems will always be a pain but I'll do what I can, now as a disclaimer I will state right now I have never EVER worked with any server type hardware in my life all my experience has been with consumer products so take my advice with a grain of salt.

What you are describing sounds like a hardware problem, now the fact you bought it off ebay is already firing warning bells for that but we'll work with it, there are multitude of hardware problems that can happen. The first thing then is to narrow down our problems, go open up your case and at least figure out if all your components are connected properly or your cpu hitsink is not dusty, a loose power connector or dusty heatsink are major players in faulty systems. After your 24-pin and cpu 4/8-pin connectors are checked move on to your RAM modules, make sure they're secure as well.

At this point the system SHOULD at least post meaning it pasts the bios check, now I don't know if this is how it works for servers but does your system make a beep noise when booting up? If it does check if it follows the old IBM beep standard for bootup (or any beep codes), those will tell you a great deal on what kind of problem you're facing.

Get back to me with some more information as this is as much advice i can give you atm.

I will hopefully boot it up later if I get a chance and thanks for your help

P.s I got it off of a school for £15 and the eBay post said they where using it as the server a week ago but then upgraded but it does confuse me why a school would put a pirate copy of vista on it and sell it if it was faulty
