Hey,

Currently working on fixing an issue, no matter what I am doing every now and then I will lose internet for around 15 - 30 seconds.

Router = Virgin Media Super Hub v2

Switch = NETGEAR GS605 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

  1. Rebooted my Network Switch and Router (Issue Continued)
  2. I phoned my ISP, they ran a test on the line and said they didn't detect any issues. (Issue Continued)
  3. Removed the switch and connected the computer directly to the router.

Now downloading multiple files (9 files) at the same time is now faster (was around 1.5MB/s now running at around 9.5MB/s) , so it looks like my switch cannot seem to keep up and has issues. Also since disconnecting the switch I haven't dropped connection.

So either the switch was to blame, or a gremlin causing the problem has decided to stop and make me think it was the switch.

Anyway, looking around on amazon I found this switch "TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch" £18.99

The reviews are mainly 4 and 5 stars, which is very good.

I looked at the 1 star reviews and people were saying that the switch blocked media servers, and they couldn't stream content from one system to another.

Is this true ? does anyone here have one ? or did they have their media server setup incorrectly ?

I don't really need this immediately, as I current use an external hdd to watch things on my TV, but end of this year or begining of next year I will be building a HTPC/storage server so will be streaming everything then.

Cannot afford much at the moment, so should I buy this now for £18.99 (budget is currently £20), or wait until I build the server and get a better one (budget for the switch then should be around £60)

Is there a better switch out there ? (Needs a minimum of 5 ports and needs to be able to stream media through a media server)

EDIT: Changed topic title.
