Hey guys,

I'll start off by saying I'm brand new to the world of bitcoin/ litecoin mining and know next to nothing about it. I'm just wondering what I could expect if I tried to get into it using my main rig (the one I game on, do everything on). I probably wouldn't mine 24 /7, but you never know.

I just want to know what I can expect to make every month (an estimate is fine, I know the value drops/increases so just a guess is great, and assuming I ran 24 / 7), along with anything else you have to suggest / whatever!

My specs are in my signature and I'm pretty sure I didn't leave anything out that matters but let me know if I did. Again, I just want to try it for a bit to see what it's like, my main goal isn't to make money off it.

Edit: My 7950 is overclocked to 1200mhz gpu clock

Me: Yeah I just really can't get my H220 working again, I've tried everything that was suggested in the forum.

Brian (Swiftech Support): Hmm, have you tried slapping it?

The 7950 is the best price/hash gpu out there right now, I don't know how much you are going to run it on a day but it might be profitable, i say might because you also have a oc cpu, which is probably pinned at 4.5 which will draw a lot more power than a non oc cpu that can downclock itself

MSI GT70-One-899NL | i7-3630QM | Nvidia GTX675MX | 12GB 1600mhz ddr3 | 128gb mSata ssd | 1TB hdd | 17.3 Full HD non-glare | Killer E2200

Oh, well that's cool! Actually, I overclocked using the offset method which means my cpu can still undervolt itself when it's not being extensively used

For 24/7 mining.... keep the vrm temps under 80c. Set a fan curve, something like 100% fan at 70c core temp.

For btc you should be able to do a bit more than 600mhash/s. How much you make daily depends on how many hours a day you're mining and what pool you're in. I'm just estimating but.. 0.02 to 0.035 btc every 24 hours.

My video card doesn't support vrm temp monitoring, but I have really good airflow and the video card fans are on auto so it should be fine. What pool would you suggest? I thought there were only teams (LinusTechTips team) so I have no clue what pools are.

I guess pools are like teams. There isn't an LTT pool, if there was I'm sure the one block we find every year would go straight into the forum.

Maybe this chart might help you out a bit.

I don't really want to suggest a pool, different people like different rewards. I like a pool that gives you the reward based on how many shares you complete and no messy 'long term=more profit' stuff. Also you might want to pick a pool that has great charts on the website. BTCGuild has nice charts, but they have that 'long ass term=a little more profit' style reward...which is only really good if you have mad ghash.

I'm in Slush,  poor charts, hard to read stats, the reward is random but I like it.

Thanks for your advice, really appreciate it! There are a TON of pools, wow. So what I should be looking for in a pool is easy to read charts, different rewards (not sure if that means what you can exchange bitcoins for?), and none of that 'stay longer and earn a bit more' stuff. I actually saw a few people on the forums talking about Slush, maybe I'll try that just to test? Also if you could link me to a decent install guide / setup guide that would be awesome!

A lot of people swear by cgminer, I don't care for it. I use Guiminer, saves worker details and I have it set to mine on start up on both rigs. There's a couple more out there if you really want to get into it.

A reward is how much you earned in btc.

Turning btc into physical currency is something you'll have to figure out on your own. You might have to pay taxes, might not. All depends. There's trading sites like mtgox.com you should look at to find out how much a coin is worth in Canadian monies.

Also, you will need a wallet. I use an online wallet because I cba to give up 10GB of Hdd space. If you keep your wallet on your pc, make at least two backups... Oh and online wallet sites get ddos'ed a lot, so...

I went through a bunch of pools before I found the one I'm happiest with. It'll take quite a bit of time but you'll figure out what you're doing/looking for.

Great, thanks. I'm setting up Guiminer now. I read that I also need to download the program here http://bitcoin.org/en/ to setup the wallet and download all the needed files, correct?

Yeah that's it. It can take a long time to DL everything.

Since you're going to be mining, you might as well fold with your cpu. In guiminer, uncheck all of the cpu affinity boxes and set folding to "light".  The "medium" and "full" settings will start to effect your mhash. Team 223518 I believe.

Sounds good. I'm trying it out now without the gpu overclock just to see what it's like...I'm getting 470mhash/s. Also, my gpu is showing up as 0% load, is that normal when mining bitcoins? I thought mining used the gpu but maybe it just uses the memory...
