Hey guys,

I've been brainstorming ideas for the past couple of hours about what to do for my ICT project at school. Lets just say that didn't go so well and have only come out with one idea which I will share later. I need a preferably hardware centric project that I can do for the rest of the term (~10 weeks), although I'm sure I could do two or three smaller projects if I talked to the teacher. He wants a project that focuses on hardware, software or networking but I can do other things, but it will be harder to get good marks. I do really enjoy the hardware side of computers anyways, so that would be preferred. The project can't be too expensive to conduct as It will have to come out of my own pocket or already be available at school. The only idea that I could come up with is to get my teacher to do something to a computer (ie give it a virus, dodgy RAM, flat bios battery ect) and then get me to troubleshoot and fix the issue, although I'm sure this wouldn't take me a whole term.

Any ideas or suggests that you may have would help me out a lots and be very appreciated (Hope this is in the correct thread, posted it in another one too sorry),

Thanks,

Cody

Build a SoftEther node... No really... Any additional node to the SoftEther public VPN helps...

Details:

that... or a server for ssh/sftp where students can submit their works or use the hardware of the machine to perform other tasks... This one is a bit dangerous since a classmate of mine did an unintentional memory leak and crashed the server...

Really depends what kind of access you have to things...

For my grade 12 comp sci final, I used a friend's old desktop they weren't using, and set up a Wireless AP via a win XP VM, and then an FTP server via a Win 7 VM, lastly, having all connected to a Server 2008 domain to control access, and allow connections to both from anywhere, so long as you could get onto the domain (which I convinced my HS's IT guy to graciously allow me to set up on the network, with his supervision of course)

Is that like, free wireless internet in the form of a VPN or something?

Far from it... It's just a tunnel service... Adding another node to the network helps in the project...

Oh, I was hoping for something similar to a cb radio version of the internet, completely (almost) unregulated and entirely user based.

Someone needs to start that project, worldwide free high speed wifi.

Infrastructure is a big problem, for one...

You'd want to be independent of nasty ISPs if you want that to work (properly)....

At the very least, Softether is a free tunel to get past the great firewall of China, and non-government region locking...

Oh I'm saying we need a cheap way to broadcast a wifi signal, with a good amount of range and speed to it, from the home for low cost. Thus eliminating the need for ISP's basically. Think HAM radio style internet.

Make a server. like get a bunch of Am1; fm2+ kaveri cpu's and make them all into a single server? I'm sure it's possible. than just play around with it; it'll be pretty cool too.

Or mess around with resberry pi and NFC communcations.

something like this http://www.adafruit.com/products/364 with the resberry pi and make something cool

Volunteer hotspot phones, maybe?

I can't remember which ISP TekSyndicate talked about a few months back, but they were planning on implementing public+private wifi on their customers (potentially eating into the customers' bandwidth and creating a possibly fatal security hole)...

There's this government project near where I live where they put wifi at  the bus stops... I was in that area 2 days ago and forgot to check the works... Unfortunately, it is one of the high-crime (snatchers, pickpockets muggers) areas so I was on high-alert...

Ahh. I'm more talking about what HAM radio operators do, they bounce signals off of each other in order to overcome the limited power of their transmitter, and gain the ability to reach across the globe, Imagine everyone doing this same thing with a wifi signal, broadcasting out to a few miles. but not having to pay an ISP. So basically everyone would have free internet, or at least reduce their costs.

It might be impractical using wifi, but I get the gist of it...

What might work is a cellular model of the thing, but handovers will be your main problem... It would also be hard to push for this in high-interference areas like in cities...

What might work is having a dedicated frequency band (not in the wifi, bluetooth, TV, or cellular frequencies) for the underlying communications (node to node), then having the wifi operate normally within the areas...

Radio broadcast works differently with wifi since wifi is a 2-way connection, and with individual devices connecting to multiple webservers at any single time, you'd have one huge bottleneck somewhere in the system... There would also be a connection count limitation, but this is no longer a problem if you implement IPv6...
