Hello all new to the form and wanted to get some input on an ssd. I have a samsung 7 series and recently my hd died( another story) . I have always wanted to upgrade to ssd . I was told the 840 pro was the way to go . But by another person they said it may run slower and get filled up quickly because my stock hd was a tb , I bought 512 samsung 840 pro. If you haven't guessed by now the guy telling me this is from geeksquad. Im not tech savvy but doesn't info initially handled by the processor and if it cant handle it it writes to ram? Then for huge long term it goes to hd? Is the 512 840 pro an upgrade over the stock tb hd? I know theirs and video on this but its still not making sense . If you think and recommend I need a tb ssd to run smooth, should I just go with the tb evo? How much of a difference is that from the pro? Would a hybrid drive be an option too? Or should I wait a few weeks until the 850 pro comes out and spend an arm and a leg. But at that point I might as well pony up the extra cash and get a whole new laptop , which I don't want to do . Thanks for the advice and help.

Paul

The 512GB 840 Pro will have 512GB of storage space. The 1TB will have 1TB. So you can figure out how much you need. But in most cases SSDs do not slow down as much as HDDs as you fill them up.

Also, when you replace the HDD for a SSD, the HDD does not magically appear again, and it does not write files to RAM.

In most cases, all SSDs will run smooth, they are much faster than HDDs.

In the end, get what has a good price and fits your needs.

840 eve would've been better than the pro....unless of course you write terabytes worth of data daily.

How full was your 1tb drive?

Personally I would go with a 256gb 840 Evo and a 1tb WD Black.

Put your operating system and important programs on the 840 evo and you'll still have a terabyte of storage on the WD Black, plus you'll save a bit of money.

Thanks for the quick replies. So the tb evo would be a better option then the 512 pro? My hd wasn't filled up to much I'm a causal gamer and have movies and music pictures, but Usually back them up to a wd external hd . Vascol if i were to keep my 512 pro could I get the wd black also ? How would I go about that. I bought it on newegg. So I should just do a exchange my 840 512gb pro for the 1tb 840 evo . And my problem would be solved? Thanks again .

What problem....

Theres no problem....If you need more space to store videos/pictures then get a secondary hdd. If your ssd still has room on it, then you don't need anything.

Sorry for the confusion. Reason im posting this is to get incite on the ssd I bought . The guy at geeksquad said I shouldn't put my ssd I bought into the laptop because its not a tb hd. My laptop hd is still dead and needs to be swapped with a new one . He basically refused to change my dead hd thats still in my laptop ,for the new 840 pro 512gb pro that I just received in the mail. That why I asked should I just do an exchange for the 1tb 840 evo and go back and have them swap out my dead hd for the new ssd . Or is my 840.512gb pro that I already have up to snuff and the guy at geek squad is a jabroni and doesn't know what he's talking about. Thanks

ignore everything geeksquad ever tells you, and just assume the opposite. Its a miracle they can dress themselves in the morning.

Just swap in the new ssd yourself. Its not hard. You unscrew a couple screws, slide the drive in, and reinstall windows and its drivers. Easy.

Ah, didn't realise it's in a laptop.

You can still absolutely use the 512gb SSD in your laptop. there isn't going to be an issue and that geek squad guy is a jerk.
