No I'm not talking about resolutions or anything like that when it comes to console games, in fact the resolution of the game that led me to making this (Made by everyones FAVOURITE company...) doesn't even matter. I am of course, talking about FIFA. Now I am normally a PC gamer nowadays, but FIFA is one of the reasons I own an xbox one, as I love sports games in general (FIFA, Madden, NBA 2k etc), and these seem to be better on console than PC.

Anyway back to the point, EA today have had problems with their servers for FUT (no surprises there), meaning a lot of people can't get online to play the game the way that they want to, and, frankly, should be able to. It got me thinking, are companies taking advantage of the fact that consoles are now able to receive updates via the internet? Using EA as an example, the FIFA series of games aren't normally completed by launch (evident with bugs and stuff, in fact a lot of them aren't even complete by the time the next is launched...), and are updated throughout the year. This can cause a lot of downtime in terms of updating the servers with new content, along with (un)scheduled maintenance, and downtime is obviously not convenient for the consumer.

Ubisoft have taken a different route in the past when it comes to taking advantage of being connected to the internet, with DLC. A prime example was Assassins Creed 2, where 2 sequences were conveniently removed from the game, only to be released later as downloadable content. If this was 1998, they wouldn't have been able to do this for obvious reasons (Consoles at the time were not connected to the internet), yet nothing is stopping them doing this now.

Obviously these are just examples (And not a rant towards EA and Ubisoft, not entirely anyway...) but a lot of companies are taking advantage of DLC and online maintenance to "improve the experience". Now, I'm ok with DLC as long as it isn't necessary, or the contents of the DLC are not vital to the game itself (Like AC2's was). It got me thinking, are the industry standards out of date? Say for example, an industry standard existed where:

Every game must be completed in it's entirety, no extra purchases should be necessary to be able to use the game to its full potential, and no bugs/glitches are to be reported within 14 days of release, else a refund will be given for every copy,

Downtime of games is limited to 3 instances per year, any more than this results in compensation (not in-game) being administered to consumers,

If the major features of a game are removed within 3 years of the games release (Similar to what happens with old FIFA games i.e. servers turned off meaning no FUT etc), then compensation (again, not in-game) must be given.

How many games companies would actually produce better games (or games that are actually complete/working)? I mean, let's be honest, there are a lot of games companies that are only around nowadays to make money, they don't care about the games, they just want the money. So to filter out games that aren't completed fully, hit them where they hurt most, in the wallets.

Rant over, though some thoughts on this would be nice :P

Chris

I know it probably does, but it is a bit wrong isn't it? (It also used to say in Gamestation UK's Ts & Cs that, by buying anything in their store, they own your soul, not an argument just a fun fact :P)
