I plan on building a Linux based FileZilla home data backup PC (I guess it can be considered a server?) to just back up data to for my household users (ie me and my brother).

I assume I can get away with just 4GB of RAM and a simple dual core 3.0GHz CPU?

I plan on having 8TB for storage (x4 4TB HDDs running in RAID) with 2 extra 4TB HDDs functioning as monthly back-up drives.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on RAM & a CPU for this build?

I think just get a mobo that have SATA3. Also what is your budget?

Definitely wont go over $100 for a CPU or RAM (each). That's really my only limit.

Get a decent board that supports your HDD specifications (at least 4 SATA3) and use an Intel 'T' version processor to minimize power consumption. As for RAM, 4Gb should be enough for that build.

Yeah the MB i plan to aim for will have 6 sata3 minimum. Most likely will go for one of ASUS's TUF boards...

With that much storage 4GB of memory really isn't sufficient.

Which RAID?

Planning on RAID 10, though...if anything RAID 1 definitely

Under Windows I would agree, but its going to use Linux. Are you sure Linux is that RAM hungry?

It is not that Linux is memory hungry. It is the sheer size of the directory structures, even when it is only storing backups. A slow storage server will slow down workstations and can potentially stretch the length of time required for backup significantly.

It probably offers much more functionality than you need, but have you considered running something like FreeNAS?

Haven't heard of that until now, but I'll definitely check into it. Thanks ^^

My main goal is to have a 'single' solution for my brother and I to back up our files at least without having to have tons of external USB HDDs everywhere. Figured a single computer sitting in the corner and connected to our router would do the trick.

I'm initially planning to use Linux Lite OS with FileZilla since I've had experience with it before. But as I said, i'll check out freeNAS, look up reviews and tutorials on it, see how I like.

EDIT: bleh, seems the server version of FileZilla is only for windows. But, I do like what I've seen of freeNAS, so I'll end up using that on the 'server' PC.

Pretty much gone ahead and picked out most of the parts, but I'm stuck between choosing these 4 Western Digital drives. Unsure which one would be my best choice for long term reliability...(decided to go with 6TB as 8 may be overkill)
