Hey, so recently I upgraded to a 4690k+Z97-A from asus, I also upgraded my 8gigs of ram, to 16gigs. I had 2x4gb, so, I added another 2x4gb.

I'm confused whether it is quad channel or still dual channel, and how does it work if it is dual channel or neither with 4 sticks?

The box of the 4690k says it supports dual channel DDR3, and my system recognizes 16gb, but how is it runnning in it?

confused

So how will it affect my ram performance and such? very confused how having 4 ram sticks and running dual channel works, and what it changes

Your board has 2 memory channels, each channel has 2 slots, you can either put a DIMM in one of each channel, or you can put 2 DIMMs in each channel, it's still dual channel because there are only 2 physical channels.

All it changes that you need to worry about is that you get more RAM for your system to use, the extra power delivery and controlling the memory is the task of the memory controller and power circuitry.

Nice choice of CPU and motherboard BTW that's a fine combo.

Sorry, still confused considering I havent even really worried about ram, but so to keep it short and just let myself sleep at night because I'm awake thinking about this on my ultrabook,

Q: I can utilize the full 16gb of ram right? Also, what performance might change between the dual channel and quad channel, is it a ton?

Yes you can utilize all the RAM, you can't use quad channel on your motherboard so don't worry about the difference.

Let me put this simply, your motherboard with 4x4GB RAM sticks in it = completely normal operation as it intended to, and full utilization of all of the memory, rest easy.

T.T Thanks, little things like this just bug me in the night because i worry about not remembering to figure them out the next morning, and honestly I have a TON of holes in my knowledge about computers, even if I do know a good bit here and there, small things like this, I still learn.

This is what the forum is for. :)

Perhaps read up on how memory channels work another time if you're interested, but for now you can be assured that your memory config is 100% normal and running correctly.
